Experiencing the simpler life – if only for a few hours

It was 2:15 AM on a hot summer's night and I was sitting in the living room of my apartment in Scottsdale, Arizona -- with no electricity. I awoke about 10 minutes earlier to total darkness and complete silence. Things that I've always taken for granted weren't working: no air conditioning, no lights, no TV, no internet, no refrigeration, no fans...no...no....no.

Life Is Not A Spectator Sport

No matter how many candles appeared on our last birthday cake, we can stay youthful and be happier if we are willing to be a perpetual student of life. But, life can teach us only when we are bold enough to venture into uncharted territory and willing to feel the excitement of trying something new. Notice I used the word “excitement” rather than “nervousness” because the former makes us feel good and the later makes us feel fearful.

However, it would be my hope, that some of the principles I learned the hard way, as a navy aircraft carrier torpedo pilot in World War II, as a teacher, high school principal, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, might still be of value today.

Give a Little, Receive a Lot

Independence Day, July 4, is celebrated all over the 50 states with picnics, parades, relaxing and of course, the fireworks display enjoyed by many. (Except, our furry four legged friends.) The Statue of Liberty was the backdrop for immigrants filing through the halls of Ellis Island in gratitude as they embraced their new home.
