A Tale of Two Beauty Make-Overs

By Sharon Sultan Cutler

It's not true that only Hollywood celebrities receive frequent beauty make-overs for photo shoots, commercials, and magazine covers. Plain folks like me get them too - sometimes, like in my case - once a year or twice a decade for a really special occasion!

Make-Over Number 1

My first recent face-to-foot do-over was in 2008 when I was getting ready to be Mother of the Groom, usually the least visible nuptial member after the Bride, Groom, and Mother of the Bride. For my son Eric's wedding, I was the actual birthing Mother of the Groom, followed in authenticity by Jane, Eric's loving Step Mother. Then there were the dads - the bride's father, and Eric's father Steve and Step Father, Steve II.I craftily developed an abbreviated list of titles for each member of the wedding party. The BG's ... Bride and Groom ... Kate an and Eric.

Mother of the Groom Makeover

  • MOB Mother of the Bride (Anne)
  • MOG Mother of the Groom (Me)
  • SMOG Step-Mother of Bride (Jane)
  • FOB Father of Bride (Doug)
  • FOG Father of Groom (Steve)
  • SFOG Step Father of Groom (Steve II)

Then, I went to Craig's List and added my query to their Beauty section in Chicago.

Basically, I explained that my son and future daughter-in-law were having an extravagant destination wedding at the Stowe Family Inn, where The Sound of Music was filmed. I delved into the basic facts: my ex, his wife, my ex-family, my ex-friends (who chose him over me but still basically like me from afar) would all be there in designer evening couture and, probably, with many extreme facial make-overs (a complete assumption on my part).

I love reading AARP’s magazine, appropriately named AARP Magazine. The publisher does get right to the point!

AARP’s feature articles and news stories usually give a positive, pro-active spin on subjects which might otherwise create daily worry and nightly insomnia for millions of us. I know that you know the topics intimately affecting millions of us today: finances, jobs, retirement, health, illness, and swine flu (aka H1N1 flu).
