By Sharon Cofar, cSMM, CRTS, PMP

A Move Made Easy, Inc.

MOVING for everyone is stressful, however to the senior population, it is particularly burdensome. Here are some practical tips to help families and care- givers lessen the physical and emotional impact of moving for their elderly family member or client as well as for themselves.

  • Help them sort and discard BEFORE they move. Paying someone to pack and move things they don’t need is like throwing money away. Also sorting and discarding BEFORE moving, makes unpacking easier.

American Seniors to Celebrate New Seniors Day June 5, 2010

In the US someone turns 65 every 10 seconds.

"These ain't your granddad's senior citizens," said Don Potter, a seniors marketing expert and author of The 50+ Boomer: Your Key to 76 Million Consumers.

Potter leads a movement of new seniors who are tired of being typecast as “over the hill” and beyond their usefulness. To draw attention to this group and what they stand for, Potter has designated June 5 as a day to celebrate and recognize the new senior class.

Study Finds Retirees in Good Health Face Higher Health Care Costs

The latest brief from Center for Retirement Research at Boston College found that retirees in good health face higher lifetime health care costs than those in poor health.

According to the study, a typical healthy couple at age 65 can expect to spend $260,000 with a 5-percent risk of exceeding $570,000. A typical unhealthy couple can expect to spend $220,000 with a 5-percent risk of exceeding $465,000. Those in good health live longer, eventually become less healthy, and often need nursing home care. So the healthy who delay buying Medigap or long-term care insurance could face much higher premiums later.

Remembering "The Good Old Days"

Do you remember some of these same childhood experiences from "the good old days?" I hope you smile as you journey back in time...

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummie in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

A New Face of Volunteering

As the oldest baby boomers move closer to retirement, studies indicate that approximately one-third have intentions to participate in community service.

Although one would think that individuals volunteer in greater numbers once they retire, as a general rule, the percentage of those giving of their time actually peaks at mid-life and then gradually declines. At the same time, Americans who do volunteer during their early years of retirement do it with greater frequency than younger volunteers.
