Anti Drill Sergeant Personal Training

By: Mirabai Holland, MFA © 2010

Anti Drill Sergeant Personal Training- Mirabai HollandA friend was describing her personal training sessions to me the other day, and she said, “there’s a fine line between coaching and abuse.” Sadly, I was not shocked to hear that statement. Lots of trainers think clients need a drill sergeant, to whip them into shape, and push them to do the things they’re just too lazy to do.

Small wonder those trainers experience a large client turnover. In my opinion, good training technique can be described in one word:

Try doing them every other day. For the first three, start with eight reps and build up to 16. For the last two (isometric exercises) hold for 10 seconds and build up to 30 seconds. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Exercise

Q. I have just been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I have been told that exercise might help. Can you please give me some guidelines to follow?

A. There are an estimated half a million Americans with CFS.

Women are more prone than men to developing diseases where the body's immune system fights its own tissue. Diseases that fall into this category include chronic fatigue syndrome, fibro- and polymyalgia, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Running Workout

Q: Now that the weather is getting warmer, I have decided to take my running workout out of the gym and into the great outdoors. I usually run for an hour three to four times a week at about 8 minutes a mile. As the weather gets hotter I have noticed that I'm having trouble keeping up my pace. Is there anything I can do to help me hang in there?

A: Actually your body is telling you to slow down and you need to listen! It takes about 2 weeks to get use to running in warmer weather. You need to acclimate slowly to higher temperatures. Here are a few pointers to help you do that.
