Love, Sex, and Romance After 50
Michael Brickey, Ph.D.

Brand New Article -- First Time Online!

The Times Are Changing

Television shows like to snicker at and make fun of grey-haired romance, but in real life, love often gets better with age. One reason is that many of us learn from experience and mistakes. With age we also tend to learn to manage our emotions better, deal with conflict better, and know when to try to change someone’s behavior and when to let it go because arguing would be futile at best. Research finds that we tend to focus more on the positive as we age.

Young adults are often so preoccupied with making a career splash and rearing children that there is little time left for love and romance. While teens and young adults often pick mates on the basis of who is “hottest,” prettiest, or most popular, older adults tend to place more emphasis on being kind, considerate, and having common interests (beyond pop music).

Baby Boomers hate limits and while “The Greatest Generation” might be inclined to give up on pursuing amore after fifty, Boomers are convinced the old rules don’t apply to them. One of the old rules was that men pursued women their age or younger. But now there are as many women dating younger men as the other way around. So now we have cougars as well as wolves pursuing younger partners.

The Big Six...Ohhhhhh - Boomers heading towards Senior Status

By Linda S. Thompson

Now that the Boomers are reaching "elder" status and qualify for those dreadful "senior" discounts, what will happen to their upbeat, youthful approach to life? Will anything change?

According to Robert Schwalbe, author of Sexy, Sixty and Successful: A Guide for the Aging Male Baby Boomer, hitting 60 and commencing the seventh decade of life is difficult because men confront the undeniable fact that their bodies are changing -- usually sagging. Hot young women aren't even giving them a first look, much less a second look. Suddenly, those Viagara and Cialis ads sound pretty darned interesting.

Seniors Beyond Age Eighty May Need Extra TLC
Be Able to Enter the Cyber-world for Fun and Profit

By Luise Volta

Most of the present generation of seniors past the age of approximately 80 may not have had computers introduced into their work-lives. When that is the case, it may feel daunting to them to try to stretch into a new technology without any real foundation. Fear of failure can be a strong deterrent in attempting to learn something new plus having to commit strange data to a less and less reliable memory could put them off. Very few are initially comfortable alone in cyber-land.

Seniors who haven't experienced email often think that landline telephones and an occasional letter are good enough because they always have been. Most could profit from learning more about the beauty of instant delivery sans interruption. Family members and friends who have the patience can often present a whole new world to senior-seniors just by a short demonstration of what's available and how it works.

Senior Support - Family Touching Family
By Wade Robins

One of the biggest fears confronting those who are approaching old age is the loss of friends and loved ones who have been with them throughout their lives.  Losing someone close is difficult at any time, but when one is struggling with the infirmities which aging brings, any loss of support is magnified.  Senior support is essential to help the elderly enjoy their lives.

Senior support is more than a matter of having senior housing and assistance.  Elderly people will not thrive without the emotional connectedness that only family and friends can provide.  Anyone who is feeling helpless and vulnerable longs for a friendly hand extended in support, and knowing that someone you love and trust is ready with financial or emotional support can make the difference between a peaceful old age and a terrifying one.  Senior support does not have to be an overwhelming effort.
