"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."

Michael S. Burnham, Jr.
Co-Founder, My Next Phase and our "non-financial" retirement-planning columnist.
Upon the sale of a successful family business in 1998, Michael Burnham found himself at a crossroads, wondering what the next phase of his life would hold. “I asked colleagues, friends and family members (some of whom are licensed psychologists and therapists) what was available in the way of non-financial retirement guidance,” recalls Burnham.
“The answer both shocked and frightened me: Nothing.” Determined to find guidance for himself, and to potentially uncover an untapped market, Burnham and his colleagues set off to create personalized, non-financial retirement guidance for the tens of millions of people who will retire in the next 10 years.
Burnham notes that the transition into retirement can be compared to navigating a challenging river. “A handful of retirees will achieve success by chance, the great majority will experience unnecessary difficulty because they are unprepared. Some will be unsuccessful and drown in depression, anxiety or fatigue. My Next Phase is a bridge across this river, helping individuals find their unique path to a smooth, successful retirement transition.”
He has a CPA and Masters of Science in Accounting from Northeastern’s Graduate School of Professional Accounting, and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College. Michael Burnham resides in Memphis, TN.
