Tick Tock Tick Tock

History indicates that it was the Sumerians who initiated the idea of time. However the culture was lost before it could pass on its knowledge.  Following were the Egyptians who were next to officially divided the day into parts.  The obelisks were built as early as 3500BCE, showing the year's longest and shortest days as well as determining morning and afternoon.   But it was the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars that have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout our existence. Ancient civilizations relied upon the celestial heavens and the apparent motion of these bodies to determine seasons, months, and years. From sundials to atomic clocks humankind has had some system of telling time.

Give a Little, Receive a Lot

Independence Day is celebrated all over the 50 states with picnics, parades, relaxing and of course, the fireworks display enjoyed by many.  (Except, our furry four legged friends.) The Statue of Liberty was the backdrop for immigrants filing through the halls of Ellis Island in gratitude as they embraced their new home.  My father was one of those immigrants from Lala Elias Greece who came alone as a teenager in 1916 to join his brothers and start a new life in the land of milk and honey.  All my life I've admired him for his gumption, fortitude, and courage to leave what was comfortable and step into the unknown.  He wasn't alone in his bravery as there were many brave folks who left the only homes they'd ever known, family members and good friends.  Regardless, something pulled at their hearts to leave.

The Sound of The Voice...

Even More Precious When It Can't Be

Heard  Any Longer...

Having nothing to do has not been part of my life script this time around.  From making pinecone baskets with twinkle lights to unique tennis apparel, my interests have been varied.  In fact, many actually turned into businesses.

In 1985 when I was preparing for my Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology, I designed a major project as an aspect of my studies that involved visiting the Jewish Home for the Aged in Reseda, California and interviewing many of the residents.  It was the foundation for a business I eventually started and called Treasures on Tape.  The elderly were as eager to share their life stories with me, as I was to question them and record their priceless memories on tape.

Awakening

The four seasons offer us the opportunity to recognize change as well as honor the laws of the universe.  Each season brings a certain quality of energy.  Some folks love the crispness of the fall as the leaves turn and days are shorter.  Others savor the purity of snow along with the varied activities only the white stuff provides. And then we have those who love the heat of summer and the franticness that seems to coincide with the days of longer light.  But springtime is a season that is welcomed by almost everyone.  Cherry blossoms, melting snow that feed the rivers, new green growth unfurling from trees, and shrubs alive with vibrant flowers seem to spark something within.

Long-Timers

There’s a first time for everything, they say.  Let it be known that 2006 was the first year since 1964 that this attitude doc spent away from her husband on their 42nd wedding anniversary.  I guess we have what is labeled a “long-term or longtime marriage,” and that seems to be somewhat of a rarity these days.  I always did seem to be drawn to doing things that were a little different.

Could it be that maybe my husband and I are fortunate to inherit some longtime marriage genes?  My in-laws did their dance together for close to seventy-two years and my folks almost fifty.  I wonder if they changed as much over that period of time as I saw in myself.

If Only You Could Love Enough….

What thoughts did you choose as you flipped over the calendar page to the month of February? Maybe you sense your self starting to close down because you know this is the month of sweethearts and lovey-dovey card and candy exchanges, and that your someone special hasn’t shown up in your reality as of yet. If this is the case, the first day of February can be a day that presents an enormous opportunity for introspection and willingness to look into the relationship you have with your self. It’s about making life changes.
